What’s the use of a good site if no one can find it online? This is one of the basic principles behind search engine optimization. Of course, websites that rank higher in the search engine results especially those that appear on the first page obtain more visits than those sites buried a number of pages back. Because of this, webmasters are continuously finding ways to get their own sites ranked higher. Literally and figuratively speaking, it’s a race to the top and like any other competition; there are methods that will enhance your likelihood to come out victorious. However, some methods prove to be riskier than others.

If your business doesn’t have a website, then you don’t exist. This is today’s trend of marketing. The reason is that most people nowadays just “google” whatever they need. Now the competition in between online businesses has been stiffer than ever and the use of unethical SEO techniques is becoming widespread. When you are through with this article, you will understand why breaking search engine rules may lead to your company’s downfall.

Terms of service can cover a wide range of issues including acceptable user behavior online, and a company’s marketing policies. Search engines like Google have carefully designed terms of service which users must agree to and abide. The reason for this is that they want to ensure that their visitors get only quality search results.

However, there are those that would really test how far they could go without any regard to the resulting consequences. These are the people who use “Black Hat SEO techniques”. Black Hat SEO involves questionable and sometimes illegal search engine techniques. It is about spamming. The method focuses on earning money without even trying to provide value to the visitors. Keyword stuffing, invisible text and doorway passages are some of the widely used Black Hat SEO techniques.

Black Hat SEO is tempting because these slick tricks actually do work. Your site often ends up getting higher search rankings. But take note, the glory will only be temporary but the consequences may be permanent.

Black Hat SEO techniques will attract visitors. However, because your website does not actually contain quality content, they will then leave and will never come back. As this condition occurs continuously, search engines will in due course discover this and then you will be penalized.

Search engines will penalize delinquent sites by reducing their rankings or worse, by eliminating their listings from databases altogether. No companies will be excluded. Not even a top dog company like BMW Germany will escape. Their removal from Google in year 2006 is one infamous example.

Once this happens to you, you will not only be begging for the mercy of the search engine to take you back, but you have to start all over again with the very arduous task of mending a broken reputation.

Follow the right path. Use techniques and tactics that focus on human audience and completely follows search engine rules and strategies. Create a website that provides great user experience. This may take time but there are several legal techniques you can use to get your site ranked in a top spot. If your diligent enough, you will discover that there are authorized methods that will take your site on top of the ladder faster.

The whole goody-two-shoes way may take a little longer than the devious one but the results will be fantastic and long term.
